Title: Learning and teaching languages with ADHD: Friend or foe?

Session Description: Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD, which manifests with a lack of attention to detail, extensive movement, and lower self-control (American Psychiatric Association, 2013), may significantly affect additional language learning of individuals with this condition; and by extension, their classmates (Kałdonek-Crnjaković, 2018, 2022). Therefore, in this Zoom Coffee Hour, I would like to exchange experiences and opinions with the audience about the effect of ADHD on learning and teaching additional languages. We will attempt to answer this question: To what extent is ADHD a friend or a foe in the context of language learning and teaching? During the discussion, I will briefly introduce contextual and theoretical underpinnings of the condition in relation to second language aptitude and illustrate them with research findings and examples based on my experience as a language learner and teacher with ADHD and other specific learning disorders.
